Slippery (or Red) Elm is one of the Elms to be found (at least for now!) here in New England, and hopefully it will always be. Slippery Elm, ground into a powder form, has been used traditionally as an herbal remedy to soothe the digestive tract. Its wood was used for the hubs of wagon wheels, due to the fact that it's not easily split.

The Elms are falling quickly to the ravages of Dutch Elm disease, a very sad development. But at least we can make good use of those trees that have come down, and here's a fine bowl turned from just such an Elm. It features a warm golden color, wide growth rings, a flared shape, and striking grain lines.

Measuring 11 inches in diameter, 4 inches in height, it's finished in a soft, smooth, satin lustre.
