Description

A unique flip clock from 1979. Oh, Radio Shack...what happened to you? This clock radio is from a time when Radio Shack was THE go-to place for almost anything electronic, especially for do-it-yourselfers. Realistic was one of their "house" brands. Stereos, clocks, radios, TVs, walkie-talkies...they had it all.

This Realistic Chronomatic 117 Flip Clock AM/FM Radio and Alarm has been totally refurbished. There are some scratches and scuffs on the case which is in very good shape for 39 years old. It came to the shop in decent shape, but under decades of dust...inside and out. The clock motor was dead, all lights burned out, very scratchy volume controls.

Inspection revealed a failed previous attempt to service or fix some wiring. That has been restored back to factory condition. This clock uses the same clock movement as many later Panasonic flip clocks, including the RC-6010, 6015, 6025 and others. All of the capacitors were replaced and one transistor. The radio sounds amazing for such an unobtrusive little radio.

Here is what was done:

Fully disassembled and cleaned.
All switches disassembled and/or cleaned/tested.
The motor was cleaned and oiled using synthetic lubricant. Now working smoothly and quietly. Keeps perfect time.
All digit flaps inspected for smooth movement.
Exposed wire replaced.
The radio sounds nice and crisp with no crackling at all when volume is adjusted. It has really nice-sounding 3.5-inch speaker.
Alarm and sleep (countdown) mode function perfectly. Alarm wakes to radio or an electronic buzzer.
The burned out internal light for the digits was replaced with a Sylvania OEM specification neon light and a new lamp for the radio tuning window.
Lightly polished the tinted acrylic window, but some very light small scratches remain. It looks amazing.
All circuit board traces inspected for corrosion/lifting.
All capacitors, diodes, resistors inspected for leaking, burning or any other type of potential failure.
A total of 8 capacitors were replaced and 1 transistor. I only use Japanese or Korean replacement capacitors.
72 hour test of all features.
Operates on 120 volts/60hz, standard US power. Made in Japan.

Hard to find these in such good shape!

Please note that these clocks are 40+ years old and not perfect, but I try to get them as solid as possible before selling them.

FAQs

Yes, but only with a voltage/frequency converter. These clocks have been tested on US power ONLY. You will need to decide if it will run reliably on your country's power grid with a frequency converter. My shop is not responsible for any time irregularities when running the device outside of the US. Thank you!
