Kodak Retinette IB (Type 037) 35mm Camera
Vintage from the 1960s
Materials: metal, leather, glass
Kodak lovers, here’s another camera for you! The Kodak Retinette IB will look so lofty on your shelf, mantel, or desk.
FILM: This camera takes 35mm film, which can be found at most stores.
HISTORY: The name Retinette IB is used for two rigid-bodied, 35mm viewfinder cameras in the series of Retinettes made by Kodak AG in Germany.
The Type 037 camera was made between October 1959 and February 1963. It has a built-in coupled selenium meter made by Gossen; the meter readout is visible in the bright-line viewfinder, and is used by centering the meter needle. The lens is a Rodenstock Reomar 45mm f/2.8 in a Pronto-LK shutter, with speeds from 1/15 to 1/500 second, plus Bulb. The film is advanced with a lever, unusually mounted underneath the camera. This is made from plastic (and it is common to find Retinette IBs with a broken lever). The known serial number range of the camera is from 50981 to 274266: thus if the series was continuous, a minimum of 224,266 type 037 cameras were made.
The Type 045 camera was made from February 1963 to 1966. It has a Prontor 500 LK shutter, with speeds up to 1/500 second, a hot shoe for flash, and a depth-of-field scale. The name on the top plate was changed from the 037's rising script typeface to a horizontal, sans-serif type. The known serial number range is from 285443 to 540065: again, if the series was continuous, a minimum of 254,623 type 045 cameras were made.
The Retinette IA is similar, but without the exposure meter. None of the Retinettes has a rangefinder: this feature is reserved to the Retina cameras.
Lens: Rodenstock Reomar 1:2,8/45mm
Shutter: Pronto-LK (Typ 037), Prontor 500 LK, 1/15-1/500 + B (Typ 045)
FUN FACT: Neither camera was imported by Eastman Kodak Company into the United States of America.
CONDITION: There are a little scuffs and minor scratches over the body that come with normal use. The viewfinder is a little cloudy. It also looks like the Kodak logo on the front of the camera may have come off and was replaced with leather. Glass looks good. #3431 is etched lightly on the back to the left of the viewfinder.
DIMENSIONS: 5” x 3.5” x 2.5” (approx.)

I was disappointed after receiving this item b/c there were some dust smears visible through the viewfinder. This is the camera I used to learn photography. It was Nikon's beginner's SLR sold '82-'86. I tested this with 6 different film types noting the camera functioned well and smudging did not impact the images. my old one went out. I used it pretty heavy 2 years. Sparingly after. Stopped taking a battery charge. This is not the Nikon that lasts a lifetime and does not approach the quality of intermediate Nikons at the time and was priced about $150 in '84. Good: it is very light & compact. Has programmed, AP & manual modes. I bought this to replace an old gift. Bad: It is full of plastic parts and potential problems that won't be worth fixing. It's a learner and is good for that but don't expect years of continual use.
As described, works well. My first roll came out so nicely! Had no problems with the camera, but learning how to use older cameras has a learning curve.
Had an issue when I received this camera. I promptly contacted Jeff and we made plans to exchange. He honors his exchange policy and I am so happy for it. I have since sent over 100 shots through the camera and it has worked flawlessly. Very happy, thank you
First time ever ordering from Etsy and found this cute little camera shop. Was extremely nervous however, their customer service was impeccable and answered all my many questions straight away. I've just received my camera and it's in perfect shape :) super excited to start using it.
