Description

Your own personal cake of beeswax! Essential for use in many crafts, particularly sewing ones. Basketmakers who coil use beeswax to wax thread to ease the drag of the binder through the coil. This keeps your thread from fraying, and makes the basket look nicer. Any thread, even if it is already waxed, will benefit from a drag across this beeswax cake!

The great thing about beeswax is not only it's great natural sweet smell, but that it has a low melting point. If you draw your thread across it, and then run your fingers down the waxed thread, the heat from your body and the friction of the drag will actually help melt the wax into the thread. As you stitch, little deposits of wax are made on the basket, easing the passage of the thread. When you are finished weaving, shoot the basket with a warm hairdryer, and melt all the teeny tiny bits of wax. This makes the basket stronger, and gives it a light sheen that is very becoming (in addition to making it smell even more wonderful than it did before!)

Because pure beeswax cakes in this style are almost impossible to find nowadays, this is a blend of the finest natural imported beeswax manufactured, and probably parrafin, though the maker is not telling what it is mixed with. They do say: "Its expressly formulated for use in the apparel and textile industries, for the purpose of imparting strength to all types of thread."

each cake is unique, and some will have little dents from the wax being poured, this is natural, sometimes little chips flake off

Thank you! Lightning fast delivery, and what a cool piece of pottery. I love the texture and the blues/greens glaze. I pulled out all my old waxed linen (4-ply), and plan to try smaller threads too.

Love love love the idea and the write-up. I've done a practice try, which I'm about to rip out and do it like I want it. It's so fast and easy, I don't feel bad to be picky!
