In the 1800’s it was quite popular for affluent travelers to carry their portable writing table on their travels.

Offered for sale is a stunning example of such. This one was made by Pierce Grantham, England, noted goldsmith in the 1800’s (label inside the draw). I am unable to definitely establish the date, however in reviewing silver marks it appears to be made early century. The desk is made of sturdy English oak, with a nice aged patina, and adorned with silver plate hardware.

A “T” shaped handle is affixed to the top for easy carrying. The top is intended to hold 2 separate writing instruments, likely quills, and 2 recessed areas for holding an ink bottle and blotter. A draw in front with silver handles and a face plate would store additional quills and such. Both the top and bottom edges are trimmed with silver and each corner reinforces with silver brackets. The desk stands on 4 rounded silver legs. There is some plate loss under the handle, otherwise the desk would be in wonderful condition, (see photos).

The traveling desk measures approximately 11” inches long by 7.25” inches wide and 5.75” inches from top of handle to base.
