Description

I'm a lifelong lover of orcas (as far back as I can remember) and I fulfilled my dream of seeing them in the wild exactly two years ago in Seattle. The southern-resident orcas, also known as the J, K, and L Pods, make their home in the Puget Sound and nearby waters. For hours, I watched members of the J Pod breaking the surface to breathe, hunting together in their family unit, and have never been more in awe of these beautiful creatures.

Now, this pod as well as the K and L pods, are in danger.

These orcas' main food source during the summer months, chinook salmon, has been severely depleted due to overfishing, pollution, and other factors. Starvation in the resident orca pods has led to loss of calves and severe malnutrition and dehydration, as the salmon provide both nutrients and water to the orcas. Emergency response teams have devised plans to try to help the ailing J Pod in the short-term, but these whales need our help in the long term. J50, a 4-year-old orca, has lost 20% of her body weight and is expected to have days left to live. J35 continues her grieving ritual of pushing her dead calf through the water, now 11 days after its passing (8/7/18).

Only 76 orcas are left in this area (one of that number is being held at the Miami Seaquarium, with efforts underway to return her to her pod), and the population is dwindling at an alarming rate. In 5 years, the damage may be irreversible.

As a lover of these animals and an artist, I've created a limited edition card + print series to help aid their cause. For this physical product, 100% of the profit will be donated to Wild Orca, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, who also partners with Long Live The Kings, a public 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to restoring wild salmon and steelhead to the waters of the Pacific Northwest, and The Center for Whale Research.

Monetary donations can be made directly to Wild Orca (wildorca[dot]org).

On behalf of these organizations and these wonderful creatures, I thank you sincerely for your donation.
