Vintage from the 1960s

Materials

Plastic, Steel, Rubber, Aluminum

This is a Hermes Baby vintage portable typewriter in good working condition. Made in Switzerland, Hermes typewriters were some of the most well-made, precision machines of their time. The Baby was the company's entry in to the "ultraportable" typewriter market, and was designed to be as light and as easy to carry as possible. Originally made in the 1930s, this version dates from the 1950s.

This vintage typewriter is reconditioned and working, and it is ready to go as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
This Hermes Baby vintage typewriter is in very good cosmetic condition. The machine shows sings of use and age, as there are is some metal pitting, wear marks, and somewhat faded paint. This particular machine was also personalized by a former owner, who apparently worked for the Standard Vacuum Oil Company, (The company was a joint venture between Standard Oil and Mobil Oil to develop products for Asia.) as the typewriter's case bears a hand-painted company logo and owner details. There is also a Hong Kong sales decal indicating the machine was purchased in Hong Kong. The seller, who was related to the owner, indicated that the owner had been a member of the WWII Flying Tigers (the First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force), though I haven't been able to verify this.

Overall, this machine is in good cosmetic condition, with the hand-painted details adding a nice bit of personal history to it.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
This Hermes baby manual typewriter is in good mechanical shape. All the control features function as they should, and the machine types well, though it does show its age. As an ultra-portable, it is not as easy-to-use as a heavier, sturdier typewriter, and can be a little finicky. Its platen has hardened some and will leave indents in the page occasionally, as is common with typewriters of this age. Otherwise the machine functions as it should.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I'd recommend this vintage Hermes Baby to anyone who wants a small, compact, light typewriter to use for decorative or occasional writing purposes. The machine is not ideally suited for heavy writing, as its compact nature and less than forgiving mechanics will likely lead to some frustration. It will handle the occasional note, letter, list, or card without difficulty, and its unique historical background may appeal to anyone interested in oil or petroleum collectibles.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I do ship internationally, so please contact me if you live outside the United States and would like a shipping estimate.

Thank you, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
