This wonderful print of “The Human Body” is from Hill’s Practical Reference Library of General Knowledge published in 1906 by Dixon, Hanson & Company. The text was edited by L. Brent Vaughan, PH. B. assisted by “a corps of eminent writers on special subjects” with “recent revisions and additions by W. F. Rocheleau”. It was fully illustrated with lithographs, engravings, and historical, political and physical maps. William Francis Rocheleau was the author of over eight books but is best known for his book Great American Industries. Like many other knowledge experts to the publishing world at the turn of the last century, he began his career as an educator - at one time he was Director of Training School at Southern Illinois State Normal University. Today, images from this wonderful reference set are still used as internet clipart for their wonderful attention to detail and accurate representations - they are a unique and timeless look back in our history.

There is uniform yellowing of this page with much darker yellowing at the front of the page edge. The paper quality is in line with a publication from that time period that was intended for mass distribution yet still had gold gilt along the top. The actual images are also typical of the printing process available at that time and what you would expect of a print that is over 100 years old. On some prints there is a brown strip on one side of the image where tissue paper was affixed but has since been removed. The rough edge from the binding has also been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during display or shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 6” x 9” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in a 9x12 standard frame.
