Description

“The most wonderful and the strongest things in the world, you know, are just the things which no one can see.”

The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Written in 1862–63 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. It is Kingsley's masterpiece which he wrote effortlessly. The first inspired chapter took him only half an hour, and was instantly successful. He intended it to stir the Victorian conscience against the use of children as chimney sweeps, and it was successful in that a year later this practice was banned.

Here is a facsimile of the 1915 edition with 8 full colour plates and 95 black and white drawings by English illustrator W Heath Robinson. The drawings and paintings received considerable praise for this edition, and they really are a masterpiece in children's book illustration (see photos). Published by Constable and Co. Ltd London in 1975.

The contents are in very good condition. The pages are bright, crisp and tightly bound with no writing, marks or inscriptions. There is no tanning or foxing inside but there is a fair amount of foxing along the top closed edge.

The illustrated wrapper itself has not been price clipped. It has some mild edge wear along the top leading to some slight nicks and creasing but this is mild. A condition point to note is that there is some sun fading to the spine and along the top front edge of the boards and jacket (see photos).

A fairly large format edition produced to a high standard. Your vintage facsimile of The Water Babies will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon.

H 22.5 cm x W 17cm 320 pages, 0.69 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (With the exception of a small number of countries).
