Once upon a time--way back in 1880 to be exact--an enterprising young man opened a candy stand facing the beach of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Our hero's name was David Bradley. His little candy stand was on the old Boardwalk--just two steps above sand level. One night, after he had closed his stand, a lively surf sprayed its white churn over his establishment and, ever so slightly, dampened his stock of candy. He specialized in taffy. The next day customers tried it and loved it.

At the same time Joseph Fralinger, a former glassblower and fish merchant, opened a retail store on the Boardwalk. Within a year, Fralinger had added a taffy concession and spent the winter perfecting the Salt Water Taffy formula, eventually reaching 25 flavors. He decided that the candy should return home with resort visitors, so he packed one pound oyster boxes with Salt Water Taffy, making it the first "Atlantic City Souvenir." The one pound box still remains the most popular souvenir almost 125 years later. By 1899 Salt Water Taffy had become a household name across America!

Other than minor rust, this old reproduction of the 1926 award winner is in excellent condition.
