She liked the way thunder rolled out from every step she took. Small quakes, plumes of dust rising after each foot hit the ground. It was the hallmark of royalty, at least the hippo kind. Their large presence in the animal kingdom could not be ignored.
The sheer awesomeness of their wide feet, round bodies, massive strength and heavy footfall made them powerful, respected creatures.
And cute too.
Wubby preened a little, proud of her pink nose, nostrils fluttering delicately as she watched her reflection. The way sunlight sparkled on her gleaming silvery skin. The humans were clever, building their structures out of materials as bright and shiny as a perfect pool of water.
Wubby had seen their glittering towers, rising high like beckoning spears above the horizon, and had been drawn to them. Leaving her pod behind, setting out to explore a bit of the human world, well her world really, but she let the bi-peds use a part of it.
She was a wanderer at heart, still young enough to want to see more than the every day watering hole. Curious and brave enough to travel alone. Flirtatious enough to duck her head and smile coyly at the gaping faces that stared in shock and awe as she lumbered by.
She liked that part best, the respect a hippo received.
The people fled from her path as she approached, their shrill cries were music to her little ears. She didn't hear their fear, she heard respect. And rightly so, she was a princess in the hippo world, she stomped a foot, royally of course, and watched with delight as yet another human yelped and ran away. Skinny little legs barely making a sound as they raced across the ground. She shook her head, feeling sorry for them. Poor things, there wasn't much to them...
Wubby laughed, delighted with everything, deep bellows shaking her chest. It was a fine and noble thing to be a hippo. To have such substance, when she made her mark on the world it lasted.
Sure the humans could make these lovely structures, she turned and smiled at her reflection, but they still ran when a hippo wandered down their street.
That was power.
She smiled and wiggled her paws at her reflection.
Powerful AND pretty, perfect.
