Antique typewriter, Royal 10 restored and working
Antique typewriter, Royal 10 restored and working
Vintage from the 1930s
Materials: steel, rubber, Iron
This is an antique Royal 10 typewriter in gray. This machine is refurbished, working, and in in very good condition.
The Royal 10 was introduced in 1913 and became a huge hit for royal. The company continued to manufacture the 10 until the mid 1930s. These machines were heavy, reliable standard (office) typewriters that could take a lot of punishment and keep going. The number of these machines that are still around and capable of working is a testament to the quality of their design and manufacture.
This particular 10 is a but of a mystery machine. Originally, all Royal 10s were painted gloss black, and all had glass windows on the sides that allowed you to see the inner-workings of the machine. This machine retains the two windows, but all of it, save the bell, has been painted over in a battleship gray color, even the windows. It also has a gray baseplate that more effectively encloses the mechanics of the machine than the support bar that all other Royal 10s have.
The machine has Royal decals, and an odd serial number designation, which leads me to believe this machine had been refurbished or rebuilt at a later time and re-sold. These rebuilt antique machines were completely rebuilt and sold mostly through catalogues in the 1950s and 1960s, though I haven't seen a Royal 10 in this style before.
As with all my typewriters, I have cleaned, repaired, adjusted, and lubricated this Royal 10 and have added a new ribbon to its original metal spools. This antique typewriter is in working condition and will be ready to go as soon as you get it home.
Cosmetically, this antique Royal 10 typewriter is in very good condition. An office, or desktop, typewriter, it's large and commanding. It's textured gray paint scheme is unusual, and possibly unique, amongst Royal 10s, and makes it an instant standout to anyone who knows antique typewriters. The battleship gray paint has a few nicks, chips, and wear marks, but nothing too significant. The bright metal parts are in overall good shape, though there is some worn chrome and aging on some of it. The decals appear to be original and are in good condition.
Overall, this machine has a decidedly industrial, even military look to it, and is a commanding presence, As a standard, it does not come with a carrying case. (It also weighs about 40 pounds.
Mechanically, this Royal 10 is in excellent shape. The machine types confidently, and has a strong, responsive keyboard that feels like it could type forever. The platen has hardened some, and will leave indents and the occasional cutout, but this effect can be lessened with some cushioning paper. Otherwise, all mechanical functions perform as they should, and this machine types very well.
This Royal also has an elite (12 characters-per-itch) typeface, making it more rare than the common Pica machines.
I do ship internationally, so please contact me for a quote if you are interested in any of my typewriters.
This Royal 10 is unlike any other I've come across. If you're a decorator who wants a large, industrial-looking standard typewriter, a serious writer who wants to put a lot of letters on the page, or a collector who is looking for that strange little oddity, this machine is for you. The Royal 10 is a beautiful piece of functional art, and at nearly 40 pounds is an absolute bear of a machine. That same weight makes it a sturdy rock of a typewriter, and one that won'y give you the same "walking" problems so common to lighter portables. I recommend this machine for anyone who wants a uniquely beautiful, reliable typewriter for working or decorative purposes.

I'm so satisfied with this purchase! My "restored" typewriter does indeed work perfectly; I've already typed several pages on it with no issue. It was very securely packed and shipping was quick, and the seller's willingness to answer questions for typewriter beginners like myself is so kind, though I did end up figuring everything out myself (though I might have to ask for help when this ribbon runs dry and I have to change it!). Enclosed was a manual and a one-page guide to cleaning typewriters, along with the cleaning kit and spare ribbon I purchased. The seller's knowledge and care for typewriters was evident at every step.
It’s absolutely wonderful! I have 31 pages typed so far and it’s been perfect! Love the vintage sound and feel. Thanks Mahogany Rhino on delivering a great product!
I just received my Corona Zephyr via FedEx. Even during the holiday, the typewriter was packaged up and shipped out in short order. Having read some warnings about buying typewriters online, I was a bit worried about my new Corona's condition when it arrived. To my delight, Mark had taken great care to ensure that nothing got damaged in the shipping process. I appreciated Mark's thoughtful note, care instructions, and photocopied manual - all of which made getting up and running with the machine effortless. One note of caution - some of the typebars were a bit sticky upon arrival. I think that's just the nature of having a machine like this sent. A bit of brushing underneath the strikers and the machine types wonderfully. DO NOT RE-OIL. Mark did a great job getting everything tuned up and ready to type. Thank you!
I bought this kit (plus an extra typewriter pad) for my Olympia SM2 and Olympia SM4 (pictured). The kit arrived when promised. I’ve only used the pads so far. The size of the pad is perfect for my machines. Once I put down a pad and put a typewriter on it, it simply does not move. I particularly like the thin profile of the pad; others I considered seemed too thick. I expect to find the rest of the kit very useful as I go along this new journey of vintage typewriter ownership. I would buy from this shop again without hesitation.
