Antique Typewriter, Oliver No. 5, restored
Antique Typewriter, Oliver No. 5, restored
Vintage from the 1910s
Materials: iron, plastic, rubber, chrome, tin, wood
This is an Oliver # 5 antique typewriter originally made in 1912. It has been restored and is in working condition.
The Oliver series of typewriters are some of the most recognizable antique typing machines ever made. First made in 1896, they featured distinctive vertical, u-shaped type-bars that almost look like wings. Since the bars acquired a black patina after a while, the black wings lead to the Oliver's "batwing" nickname.
As with all my typewriters I have cleaned, lubricated, polished, and adjusted this Oliver 5, and it is ready to use.
Cosmetically, this Oliver No. 5 is in good condition. There are some paint-worn areas, oxidation, as well as some pitting and missing parts in the chrome accents. This aging has given the Oliver a strong patina, making it look decidedly old but well kept. Overall, this is a beautiful antique machine.
Mechanically, this Oliver batwing typewriter is in very good shape. Everything works just like it should, and it is ready to use as soon as you get it home. Typing with this machine is a truly unique experience, as the keys strike down against the platen from the left or right side.
The platen on this machine has hardened with age, and will leave indentations and cutouts in the page when you type.
The machine was in very bad shape when I found it. I've done a lot of work reconditioning it and replacing some worn out parts with parts from a donor machine. Olivers aren't the easiest machines to use, but this example is mechanically sound once again, though it does show its age.
I believe this machine would be ideal for a collector, a typing enthusiast who wants a unique experience, or a decorator who needs a standout antique piece for to serve as a focal point in any area.
This Oliver is one my favorite typewriters, and I'm always sad to see them go. There is something so unique about how it looks and how it types that it's hard to describe the experience. Everyone who sees it is immediately drawn to it, and everyone who uses does't want to stop. It's wonderful.
Thank you for looking, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

I'm so satisfied with this purchase! My "restored" typewriter does indeed work perfectly; I've already typed several pages on it with no issue. It was very securely packed and shipping was quick, and the seller's willingness to answer questions for typewriter beginners like myself is so kind, though I did end up figuring everything out myself (though I might have to ask for help when this ribbon runs dry and I have to change it!). Enclosed was a manual and a one-page guide to cleaning typewriters, along with the cleaning kit and spare ribbon I purchased. The seller's knowledge and care for typewriters was evident at every step.
I bought this kit (plus an extra typewriter pad) for my Olympia SM2 and Olympia SM4 (pictured). The kit arrived when promised. I’ve only used the pads so far. The size of the pad is perfect for my machines. Once I put down a pad and put a typewriter on it, it simply does not move. I particularly like the thin profile of the pad; others I considered seemed too thick. I expect to find the rest of the kit very useful as I go along this new journey of vintage typewriter ownership. I would buy from this shop again without hesitation.
It’s absolutely wonderful! I have 31 pages typed so far and it’s been perfect! Love the vintage sound and feel. Thanks Mahogany Rhino on delivering a great product!
Oh this is WONDERFUL! It came today well before it was expected and absolutely beautiful--exactly as described. The condition and key-strikes are perfect. I'm like a kid on Christmas morning; the first one down the stairs to experience the magic before a n y o n e else. The packaging was exceptional--no way this typewriter could have shifted in transit. My face hurts from smiling so much.
