Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages or Rolls Series...
Materials for the history of Thomas Becket

Archbishop of Canterbury

Edited by James Craigie Robertson

Volume 1 published 1875, Volume 2 published 1876, Volume IV published 1879,

Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages also known as the Rolls Series
A major collection of British and Irish historical materials and primary sources published as 99 works in 253 volumes between 1858 and 1911. Almost all the great medieval English chronicles were included. The collection was also extended to include legendary, folklore and archival records as well as legal tracts. The project was government funded, published by the authority of Her Majesty’s Treasury, under the direction of the Master of the Rolls - hence the name.
At the beginning of the project the print run was 1500 for each volume but later 750 became the norm with the majority of the volumes presented to public and university libraries.
Most of the volumes are either in Latin printed without translation, or sometimes in old French, Old English, Irish, Gaelic, Welsh, Old Norse etc have a translation annexed. There is often a preface in English and some notes to the margins in English. The works published within the series were not sequentially numbered although the individual parts of multi works were numbered.

Published by Longmans, Green and Co, London

Description and Condition: Green cloth covered boards with leather spine. Gilt title to spine. Covers in very good condition for age with minimal wear and rubbing to board edges. Typical Victorian marbled patterned endpapers. Each volume has a title page for the series followed by a description of the series of volumes and a title page for the volume (in black and red). Pages have a few foxing spots to front / back pages but main text pages are in very good condition.
