To Change Sizes
For each size larger than the ones given in the directions, add the number of stitches required to make an inch, to the number of stitches given to commerce the garment. Of course, if the sweater has a pattern, you must consider the number of stitches required for the pattern.
If the directions call for 6 stitches to an inch, in size 16, and you wish to make a sweater in size 18, cast on 6 stitches more than the directions call for. Then follow the directions given. When you reach the neck binding, add 2 of these stitches to each shoulder and bind off 2 more for the back of the neck.
In shaping the front, you will have to increase these 2 extra stitches. For each size smaller, cast on as many fewer stitches as are required for 1 inch. For 2 sizes larger, add twice the number of stitches required for an inch and bind off 1 more stitch for each side of armholes. Make the armhole 1/2 inch longer at both back and front.
For the sleeve, add the number of stitches required for 1 inch to the number of stitches given to commerce the sleeve.
