Description

This is an antique lady's night gown that is entirely stitched by hand. It has a linen bodice and linen sleeves with the body of the gown cotton. I believe this was so the bodice and sleeves could be detached and added to another gown if this one became worn out. The bodice has Ayrshire embroidery running around the bottom, up both shoulders, along each side of the placket, and around the neck. There is gathered net around the neckline and the placket has handmade button holes and mother of pearl buttons. The cuffs also have Ayrshire embroidery and net ruffles and there is a buttonhole and mother of pearl button on each cuff. The upper part of the sleeves are gathered but there is no gathering around the armpit so these were cut perfectly to fit. The bodice has evenly spaced gathering. There are volumes of fabric in the cotton body. The back is open but it has mother of pearl buttons and buttonholes running up the back so it can be secured. There is a small hem. All of the seams are French seams. The name N. M. Goodhue is stenciled under one arm. There are scattered small stains on the cotton and it has slightly yellowed from age. I found no damage to the linen. There are no holes.
Measurements are: side to side neck: 3". Shoulder to wrist: 20 1/4". Wrist: 2 1/2". Length: 59 1/2".
