This is a part reconstructed replica of a burnt clay statuette that was made by the Vinca culture in Romania. The original semi restored figure is housed in the Romanian National History Museum but unfortunately both mother and child are headless. I have reconstructed the sculpture with the same traditional bear masks seen on other figures of the lost Vinca culture to give us some concept of how the statuette may have looked. I chose this particular mother and child for the detail and the patterns on her back, which are faithful to the original. The figure is about the same size as the original statuette at just over 12cm tall and also resembles it as closely as possible in material, colour, surface texture and inscribed decoration.

Bear Madonnas in the form of a woman wearing a bear mask and holding a cub are known throughout the Vinca art of the 5th millennium B.C. Feeding the child in these sculptures suggests ritual representation of maternal devotion, renewal and perpetuation of life. Folk memories tell us how the bear was an ancestress and mother life giver throughout many ancient cultures of the world.

The figure comes with a slate sisplay base with protective feet and is presented in a display box that includes a pamphlet about the origins of piece and the methods used to manufacture the replica.

My figures are made from hand dug clay and fired using ancient and reconstruction archaeology methods. Open the section below the shop banner to discover more about the firing processes. Due to the nature of hand modelling and wood firing these figures will show subtle variations in modelling and colouring and the slate base, while made of the same slate, will show slight variations from the knapping.
