This figurine is a close replica of the oldest known ceramic in the world and has been fired in an open hearth just like the original. The Venus of Dolni Vestonice is 11cm tall and was found in the Palaeolithic excavation at Dolni Vestonice in the Czech Republic. Dated to c.2400BC, she predates pottery vessels by some 15-20,000 years.

She was among 700 ceramic fragments of animal and female figurines that were scattered in and around a purposely made clay firing hearth. Many of the figures were broken during firing and archaeologists believe that this may have been done on purpose. Pottery traditions have been passed down through the female line in Pueblo and many African cultures and these women were often separated from the community. The hut that housed the Venus of Dolni Vestonice’s assemblage also was away from the village and the figure carries the impression of a child’s fingerprint .

The Venus of Dolni Vestonice is 4.5 inches tall and stands 5.5" on her rough slate display stand or 8" on her oak. Both have a brass armature that allows easy removal for handling. The figure and stand come boxed with a leaflet about the origins of piece and the methods used to manufacture the replica.

My figures are made from hand dug clay and fired using ancient and reconstruction archaeology methods. Open the section below the shop banner to discover more about the firing processes. Due to the nature of hand modelling and wood firing these figures will show subtle variations in modelling and colouring, but right now the figure photographed on the slate base is the one you will receive when ordering.
