Description

Where to begin with this item? This unique display item is a fascination for most naturalists, especially those with an interest in the art of insect collection. The large paper nest is the product of a hornet colony. It is somewhat conical, like a reverse teardrop, with a single opening at the forward base. The nest is huge for this species. Very difficult to get exact measurements, but much larger than an official size basketball. (Roughly 15 inches (38 cm) across its longest point and 10 inches (25 cm) across the broadest point at the top of the nest.) It is in a very good state of preservation, having been recently collected, allowed to dry, and sprayed with a matte lacquer sealant to help preserve it. It is an authentic bald-faced hornet nest; scientific name Dolichovespula maculata. Dolichovespula maculata is a eusocial wasp of the cosmopolitan family Vespidae. Its common names include the bald-faced hornet, bald hornet, white-faced hornet, white-tailed hornet, black jacket, and bull wasp. This species is a yellow jacket wasp, not a true hornet (genus Vespa). Colonies contain 400 to 700 workers, the largest recorded colony size in its genus. It builds a characteristic large hanging paper nest. Workers aggressively defend their nest by repeatedly stinging invaders. Dolichovespula maculata is distributed throughout the United States and Southern Canada, but is most common in the southeastern United States. To be clear, we did not kill this colony. Seasonal cold weather naturally kills the colony and the queen finds a safe place to over-winter. We collected the nest after it was vacated. During it's formation, the nest was shaped around a brushy area of douglas fir tree and it incorporates some branch material from the tree in its support structure. The nest has been beautifully exhibited. We suspended it by its main support branch from a sturdy tripod support stand. The stand is made of black finished cast iron with a cast iron boss clamp at the top to firmly grip the support branch. The overall display has a height of approximately 19 inches (48 cm) measured to the tip of the support's round decorative topper. Both stand and nest come with your single order, but may be boxed and shipped separately for safe packing. We are also including a mounted specimen of Dolichovespula maculata. (See final photo.) The specimen is mounted in a natural wood and glass dome on a gold-tone rod affixed to a stage of cork. The cork has had a light surface application of eucalyptus oil to discourage destroying insects such as coddling moths and carpet beetles. A truly fascinating work of natural art and a unique curiosity. Enjoy!
Note: Ships only domestically to continental destinations in the U.S.A.
