Description

Celtic knot cairngorm brooch, hallmarked sterling silver signed James Coull, vintage 1973 Scottish Celtic cross pin, Edinburgh Scotland

This fabulous cairngorm and sterling silver Scottish brooch is fully hallmarked on the back with the thistle for Scottish silver, the three towers for Edinburgh assay office and the date letter S representing 1973. It also has the makers stamp, it's a bit rubbed but still clear, an entwined JC inside a diamond shaped cartouche for James Coull, he was first registered as a silversmith in October 1961 working out of Mitchel Street, Glasgow, Scotland. There is a little loop on the back which would once have had a little chain attached with a safety pin.

The design is very pleasing with a Celtic cross incorporating Celtic knots with a faceted cairngorm or smoky quartz ciitrine at the centre, the setting leaves the stone open at the back to allow maximum light penetration giving it plenty of life and sparkle.

Interlacing knot work represented by one continuous line is said to symbolize the hope of eternal life and everlasting love and friendship and has come to be accepted as a talisman of longevity making this a wonderful gift to give a friend or loved one.

Condition
The brooch is in excellent vintage condition in my opinion with minimal signs of wear, it is perhaps a little over cleaned, it's been cleaned by a previous owner. The pin is slightly bent, please see the photos, both the pin and roll over clasp are strong and in good working order. The faceted stone has no chips, scuffs or cracks.

Size
It measures approximately 4.3 centimetres across, the stone measures approximately 1.8 centimetres across and it weighs 11.27 grams.
