Description

“The most wonderful and the strongest things in the world, you know, are just the things which no one can see.”

The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Written in 1862–63 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. It is Kingsley's masterpiece which he wrote effortlessly. The first inspired chapter took him only half an hour, and was instantly successful. He intended it to stir the Victorian conscience against the use of children as chimney sweeps, and it was successful in that a year later this practice was banned.

Here is a very attractive edition published by Macmillan and Co., Ltd of London, being a reprinted fourth edition from 1907. In very good antique condition and with one hundred excellent black and white illustrations by Linley Sambourne.

The contents are very good indeed with clean and tightly bound pages. This copy has never been written in and there are no other marks of previous ownership. The edges of the pages are slightly rough cut and there is some mild toning along the top, otherwise with just the odd faint mark to the odd page, the contents are in remarkably good condition for a book of over 110 years old.

Deep red cloth covered boards are also good. They have blind ruling across the top and bottom, with a gilt "CK" vignette in the centre of the front board. There is some rubbing to the corners and also a bump to the bottom corners. The rear board has just the odd faint mark, otherwise covers are very tidy and smart.

The red cloth of the spine has faded a good deal in comparison to the front and back. There is some mild rubbing of the cloth at the head and tail. The gilt titles are still clearly visible. The book has become cocked (slanted) with time, but the binding remains good and strong.

An excellent version. Your copy of The Water Babies will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon.

H 19.5 cm x W 14.5 cm, 330 pages plus 32 page publisher's catalogue, 0.58kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (With the exception of a small number of countries).
