WHY BLUE LAPIS LAZULI?
Deep Blue Lapis Luzuli has been loved throughout the millennia, in dramatic jewelry worn by the young King Tut, vivid aquamarine-color paint used by the finest artists of the High Renaissance, and intense deep blue eyeshadow for the infamous Cleopatra (cue Elizabeth Taylor glamour!). The most sought after stones are an intense blue with flecks of Pyrite that illuminate the stone with a golden appearance.
Its deep, celestial blue remains the symbol of royalty and honor, gods and power, spirit and vision, a universal symbol of wisdom and truth. By the end of the Middle Ages, Lapis Lazuli was exported to Europe. It was ground into powder and made into ultramarine, the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments and used by most important artists of the Renaissance and Baroque: Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian and Vermeer. Often reserved for church ceilings to resemble the blue of the heavens, Lapis was believed to counteract the wiles of the spirits of darkness and procure the aid and favor of the spirits of light and wisdom. Catherine the Great adorned an entire room in her palace with Lapis Lazuli walls, fireplaces, doors and mirror frames.
The stone of the Goddess Isis, Lapis is the stone of guardian spirits known throughout history to block "The Evil Eye," and enhances the expression of your own individual personality. For fame in a creative or public performance, wear or carry Lapis Lazuli to auditions. In the workplace, it attracts promotion, success and lasting recognition in your field.
The traditional source of the finest Lapis Lazuli remains the same today as it was thousands of years ago — high in the mountains of Afghanistan. Other major sources are Chile and Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. -- Gemological Institute of America, Crystal Vaults, mindat.org
