Me In a Tree
Woodblock print 2009
6.5" x 15"
Edition 50

Print Title: Me In a Tree
Paper Dimension: 6.5 x 15 inches
Image Dimension: 6 x 14 inches
Block: Five cherry blocks
Ink: Akua Color pigment
Paper: New Hosho
Edition: 50
Image: When I was little I had a childhood obsession with climbing trees. I wrote a poem then: "Me in a tree, no one can find me, or laugh at me." I was never one to fit in, even as a child, and I imagine I was probably the talk of the cliques that children form. But up in the trees, I was queen, I was free and I was happy...until some grownup found me, that is. I'm sure I never came as near death as they made it out to be. Grown ups can be so melodramatic!

Comments: Process: This year I started working in the traditional woodblock method. The process requires a separate block for each color, damp paper, perfect registration, and the pigment is brushed instead of rolled. Pigments are a mix of pure pigment and water with rice paste to "make them stick". The woodblock process in the Japanese tradition is exacting, demanding and tedious, yet somehow extremely satisfying. I'm sure I will get better with time.
