Description

This is a listing for something truly unique: real, natural, wildfire-cured Western Larch resin. This tree is also commonly known as the Tamarack, turning a brilliant golden color each fall before it loses its needles for winter. For starters, Larch resin is difficult to come by. The trees are not prone to weeping resin, even if injured. Well it just so happens that one fine afternoon, whilst grooming some old growth forest on the outskirts of a burn, I came across the most perplexing things I've ever seen on a tree. Smooth, baseball-sized, blood-red "teardrops" along the base of an huge, old, fire-licked larch. Perhaps it was a mushroom? A fungus of some kind? I approached and prodded them curiously. No! Indeed the tree had bled out a large amount of sap during the blaze, which cured even as it poured out of the tree! The translucent, alien, pliable red gobs on the tree were filled with the most unique resin I've ever found; deep red, pure, clean, shining, and naturally cured gemstone-like resin nodes poured out into my collection pan from beneath their perplexing leathery casing.

This resin is almost twice as heavy as typical tree resin, by volume. There is very minimal tree debris and bark contamination in the resin; it bled quickly and cured rapidly. Much of the resin is translucent, while some is opaque. A few pieces are lightly charred and blackened. The resin has a curious texture that is almost rubber-like, even though it is solid. And its scent! The faint piney-rich aroma of larch intermingles with a most curious sweet scent akin to molasses.

This resin does NOT melt and will NOT light on fire (we tried). It does not get sticky nor lose its shape. We even burnt it beneath other things and not even the tiniest granules changed or softened. I've envisioned GORGEOUS natural jewelry and other crafts utilizing this immortal gemstone-like resin. I can't say as to its medicinal potency or properties (it likely has none), but for a truly unique aromatic and crafting supply, look no further! This was a true once-in-a-lifetime find! I only wish I'd had a camera on me when I first found this cured Larch blood, suspended eerily from a seam along the giant Larch's trunk...

Additional policies

REGARDING WOLF, BLACK BEAR, COUGAR, AND LYNX:
Etsy does not allow the sale of products or specimens derived from these species, HOWEVER it IS legal for my business to trade and export these species. These bans are NOT based on any federal laws or legal restrictions. You can check here for current inventory on these species:
http://www.desertrosetaxidermy.com

If you would like to place a custom order for one of these species, please message me on Etsy, or send an email to contact [!at] DesertRoseTaxidermy.com.
Some states/countries may restrict the import, purchase, or ownership of bear, wolf and cougar, so please check with your local Fish and Game and know your wildlife laws before placing an order.

OWL, HAWK, RAVEN, AND OTHER MIGRATORY BIRDS AND BIRDS OF PREY:
I get a lot of custom requests for items from birds of prey and other migratory species. Nearly all migratory birds are federally protected, and it is illegal to possess any part (bone, nest, or feather) of these animals. I cannot help you with your quest for these specimens!

FAQs

Here’s the scoop:
Wildlife has international trade regulations. The fees, permits, and lengthy processes have made it impractical for me to continue offering international wildlife shipment.

The good news:
Items from domesticated species have no USA export regulations. I can ship domesticated species worldwide with no additional export fees.

Remember:
Always check your local customs and regulations before importing any animal specimens!
I do not trap. I do hunt, but not for business. Wildlife is only ever taken for food or farm security. Precious few of my wildlife specimens will have come from personal hunting. The vast majority of my wildlife items are salvaged “waste” from the hunting and trapping trades, where it is commonplace for most of the animal to be discarded. This unique form of “recycling” offers folks a chance to use and honor pieces that would otherwise have been thrown away! As of 2018, none of our bones will have had any monetary exchange attached to them; we clean foraged and salvaged bones only!
