About Main Street, Ellicott City, Maryland:
The town was founded in 1772, with buildings on Main Street being added through the mid-20th century. The oldest buildings are built of beautiful local granite. Because the town was built around mills, which were powered by the water of several converging rivers, it was always prone to flooding. After devastating floods in 2016 and 2018, the county announced a flood mitigation plan which will demolish ten historic buildings, which had been used as both businesses and residences. While the plan has been grudgingly accepted as the only realistic, immediate plan to prevent future loss of life, the loss of the historic buildings is a tragedy.

As a local artist, I was moved to create this series of illustrations that captures the spirit of the historic street and town, and the lives that were lived here.
