The Fool by Channing Pollock, used book, 1922, is a religious sermon drama in which the playwright (1880-1946) tells the story of a minister who tries to lead a life according to Christ's teachings and is attacked by the people.

Twenty-eight New York theater managers had refused The Fool before it opened on October 23, 1922, and ran beyond that season; in its 4th week it took in nearly $50,000. A good record at the time.

Pollock had a serious problem getting his play on stage until he himself campaigned for his work. His labors paid off. After great success in New York, the play toured the country and in 1924 opened in London for a run of 138 performances.

Burns Mantle listed The Fool among the nine Best Plays of the Season, which included The Hairy Ape, Abie's Irish Rose, Merton of the Movies, The Old Soak and The Torchbearers, all memorable dramas in American theater history.

Eventually the play was made into a movie.

This copy is a paperback actor's edition with all staging requirements listed. Published by Samuel French, it is 146 pages.

The beige cover, illustrated with a brown lion rampant, is ragged and soiled by many actors' hands, but the binding is firm, and there are four photographs of scene actions and floor plots.
