ʻALALĀ LOVE, by Caren Loebel-Fried, is an 11x14", limited edition fine art print from an original hand-pulled, hand-colored block print that was created in July 2018 for the Hawaiʻi Island Fesitval of Birds. The materials used in this museum quality print are all of the highest quality, printed on acid-free, 100% cotton paper, with archival, pigment-based inks. The art comes inside a resealable poli bag, with an acid-free backing board, description, and certificate of authenticity.

ʻAlalā, the Hawaiian crow, is 18-20”, with black feathers tinged in brown. The last of the wild ʻalalā were found on the southwest slope of Mauna Loa in South Kona, Hawaiʻi at 4,000 to 6,000 feet. The crows traveled in family groups eating fruit, the eggs and young of other birds, nectar, seeds, insects, and dead animals. Now extinct in the wild, a captive breeding program at Keauhou Bird Conservation Center promises a hopeful future for Hawaiian crows.

ʻAlalā Love was inspired by a photo taken by Jack Jeffrey in 1999. This Hawaiian crow pair is thought to be the last remaining couple in the wild. At McCandless Ranch, where a few wild ʻalalā remained, Jack found this couple during a quiet time together, allo-preening and grooming each other.

From the artist: “When I first saw this photo, I was moved by the quiet intimacy between these two birds. Jack told me they were likely the last couple in the wild! To me, they embodied the hopeful idea of ‘back from the brink’ and so became the subjects for this piece. But I flipped their orientation, so that they might be on the other side of the brink with the rising sun behind them; A new day honors the recent release of captive-bred ʻalalā and the hope for their continuing survival.”

Caren learned the ancient art of block printing from her mother. She volunteers and researches on Midway Atoll, Kīlauea Point, and other wild places around the Hawaiian Islands. Caren creates art for many organizations, supporting the work they do on behalf of wildlife, conservation, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian Culture.

Caren’s award winning illustrated books include Manu, the Boy Who Loved Birds, A Perfect Day for an Albatross, Naupaka, Lono and the Magical Land Beneath the Sea, Hawaiian Legends of Dreams, Hawaiian Legends of the Guardian Spirits, Pua Polu, the Pretty Blue Hawaiian Flower, Tree of Souls, and Legend of the Gourd.
