Penannular brooches were in use in Europe from the Ancient Roman period through to the 11th century. The most elegantly wrought examples come from Celtic and Viking cultures, and often feature knotted, floral, and animal designs. They were worn by both men and women, and ranged from practical fasteners to elaborate fashion accessories.

This design is a more modern interpretation that creates the knotwork out of the brooch ring itself, and uses interlocking 3D printing to create a seamless link between the ring and the pin. Smaller than historical examples designed to hold up heavy cloaks, this piece makes for a beautiful accessory.

This item was digitally designed, and can be 3D printed in your choice of a range of materials. The images display the natural brass material.

Brass –
An alloy of 15% zinc, 5% tin, and 80% copper. Its colour is a pale yellow. Brass will naturally tarnish and darken over time, and can be polished back to its original, bright surface. The Natural Brass material has a rough, matte surface, whereas the Polished Brass has a smooth, reflective surface.

Bronze –
An alloy of 10% tin and 90% copper. Its colour is a warm, reddish yellow. Bronze will naturally tarnish and darken over time, and can be polished back to its original, bright surface. The Natural Bronze material has a rough, matte surface, whereas the Polished Bronze has a smooth, reflective surface.
The base for all of the plated metals is brass (15% zinc, 5% tin, and 80% copper), and the thickness of the plated metal is 0.25 microns. Please note that plated metals will wear away over time when subject to friction.

14k Gold Plate –
A bright, pale yellow, similar in hue to champagne. The surface is smooth and reflective.

18k Gold Plate –
A warm, golden yellow similar in hue to honey. The surface is smooth and reflective.

Rose Gold Plate –
A rosy, pinkish gold colour. The surface is smooth and reflective.

Rhodium Plate –
A silver-coloured finish.The surface is smooth and reflective.
Sterling silver (92.5% silver) will naturally tarnish and darken over time, and can be polished back to its original, bright surface.

Natural Silver –
A rough, matte surface.

Antique Silver –
Recessed details are blackened, and raised details are polished.

Polished Silver –
The surface is polished and smooth, though not mirror-reflective.

High-Polish Silver –
The surface is finely polished and highly reflective.
14k Gold –
A pale yellow gold with a champagne-like colour, composed of 58% gold, 31% copper, 10% silver, and 1% zinc. The surface is highly polished a reflective.

18k Gold –
A warm, redder gold with a honey-like colour, composed of 75% gold, 15% silver, and 10% copper. The surface is highly polished a reflective.

14k Rose Gold –
A pinkish gold with a rosé-like colour, composed of 58% gold, 40% copper, 1% silver, and 1% zinc. The surface is highly polished a reflective.

14k White Gold –
A silver-coloured gold, composed of 58% gold, 24% copper, 9% zinc, and 9% nickel. The surface is highly polished a reflective.

Platinum –
A silver-coloured alloy of 95% platinum and 5% ruthenium. The surface is highly polished a reflective.
All of the varieties of steel are composed of 60% steel and 40% bronze. The layering of the 3D-print process is visible in their textures.

Steel –
A pale grey colour which can exhibit varying amounts of bronze colouration. The surface is rough and matte.

Bronze Steel –
A brown-coloured steel with a rough and somewhat reflective surface.

Black Steel –
A dark-grey to black coating is applied to the steel, and the surface is rough and matte.

Nickel Steel –
A silvery coloured steel with a thin nickel coating which can darken over time and with exposure to skin. The surface is rough but shiny.

Gold Steel –
A thin layer of 24k gold gives this material a bright, golden hue. The surface is rough and matte.
