Description

This Trinket Box is crafted from Huon Pine with a top of Fiddleback Jarrah and trim of Jarrah. It is lined with brown double velvet.

Dimensions - L250mm X W148mm X H65mm.

The Box that is pictured is the Box that the buyer will receive and will be shipped in 1 to 3 business days. It is shipped via Australia Post with signature on delivery and is insured against loss or damage.

Overseas customers from countries other than those listed please contact me for shipping costs.

The wood used to craft the top of this box was sourced from a Jarrah tree that was felled in the 1930's and, because of the heavy figuring of its timber which would have made it harder to cut into boards, it was left to rot on the forest floor. But Jarrah is made from sterner stuff, and one of its many attributes is its resistance to rot.
I managed to purchase one board of this extraordinary figured timber from a licensed wood collector, and this is the last piece that I have.

Huon Pine
" Lagarostrobos franklinii "

This rare wood comes from the wild forests' of western Tasmania. It grows in lush wet rainforests along with myrtle, blackwood and other species.
Huon pine has a rich golden texture, and an exquisite smell and touch. A unique quality of huon pine is the unusual figuring that sometimes occurs, giving the impression of birds' eyes on the surface of the wood. When this occurs, which is rare, it is called birds eye huon pine, making it extremely valuable.
Huon pine contains a natural oil which gives the wood a unique fragrance which is never lost. This oil makes up 7% of the tree's volume. A box made from this wood will always retain the fragrance of the oil when the lid is opened. This natural oil makes the wood resistant to water penetration and rot, making huon pine an ideal timber for boat building. This has made Tasmania famous for boat building since the days of the early convicts.
Because of this unique quality it was felled indiscriminately, and has become extremely rare. It is now a protected species and can be sourced only from dead fallen trees by specially licensed wood collectors. Huon pine can vary in age from hundreds to thousands of years, and some existing trees may be 5,000 years old. The rich creamy yellow wood is soft, durable, smooth, oily and light weight. The wood is very easy to work with and takes a high polish. Huon Pine is the most durable of Australian timbers, and logs, which have lain on the ground for several hundred years are still being harvested and milled.
Huon pine can only be found in Tasmania and it's timber is highly sought after by woodworkers for furniture, craft wood and turning .

Exactly one year ago, I bought my first jewellery box from Tony. I wrote "Should I buy one again, then only with him!" What can I say? Now the time has come. :-)

The wooden box (as a protection) with his handcrafted absolutely perfect artwork arrived super fast in Germany. Just as quickly I could pick it up at customs.

Once again I am amazed at how outstanding his handwork is. I am very excited, because now my new rings are kept dignified.

Oh yes ... The plate made of abalone shells incorporated in the lid did it to me. It shimmers so wonderfully ... and I am also fascinated by the wood.

Everything fits, sits and moves perfectly.

For sure I will come back again!

    Kind Regards, Friedrich
