Description

Andrea Marcos, an artist for social movements from Seattle who spent time in Berlin tracing her family history, designed the “What really makes us safe?” image. It’s a linocut print, where the image is carved into linoleum and then printed on paper.

The sewing box represents our toolbox of strategies for making ourselves safe without repressive mechanisms like prison and police. In the box, there are symbols of some of the things that might really make us safe:
…social safety net for all (like access to healthcare, housing, public transportation, and legal residency)
…political organizing for collective power (a button from feminist of color network INCITE!), …a connection to our pasts (family recipe book) and to our own fabulousness (lipstick and bolt cutters)

We’re selling original prints that Andrea made for us for 10-25 euros. All profits go to Andrea to support her largely volunteer work making political struggles more beautiful.

The print is in German and was used as a cover for the book "Was macht uns wirklich sicher?" by Melanie Brazzell (http://www.fair-bestellwerk.com/Was-kann-uns-wirklich-sicher-machen).
