This is a rare Royal 1 Standard, or "Flatbed," typewriter in very good condition. This antique typewriter was made in 1911, and is in working condition.

The Royal 1 Standard was Royal's first typewriter, and the machine that launched a typewriter brand that would last into the 1970s and end up producing millions of iconic machines. Introduced in 1906 and originally selling for a princely sum of $65, roughly equivalent to about $1,900 in 2018. Colloquially known as the "flatbed" for its, well, rather flat looking design, it was later replaced by the Standard #5, and after that the #10, the Royal Standard #1 was not around for long. A lot of the machines have been lost over the years, and they are fairly rare today. Many collectors consider having a Royal flatbed in their collection an absolute must.

This example was manufactured in 1911, and is in remarkable shape. Though I had to make a few minor repairs when restoring it, the machine is once again in working condition.
I have repaired, lubricated, adjusted, cleaned, and polished this Royal 1, and it is ready-to-use as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this Royal 1 standard typewriter is in very good to excellent condition. Though some of the luster and shine of the original paint and chrome has faded with age and oxidation, the overall look of the machine is one of a beloved antique that has taken a century to acquire a well earned patina. This is a typewriter that looks old and bright at the same time. There's no mistaking this for a modern reproduction, something that I think adds all the more to its beauty.

This Royal 1 also has a dealer's phone number in one of the shift keys. The key says "Dial DeVeau 6336." which was an old telephone exchange number that may now be lost to the ages. Regardless, it's a lovely little time capsule that does that much more to affixes this machine as a relic of an age long gone.

This is, overall, a stunning example of mechanical antique art, and will be a treasured part of any home, office, or collection.

This is a standard, or desktop, typewriter, so it does not have a case.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
This Royal 1 typewriter is in very good mechanical condition. The machine maintains all of its original functionality and can type when called upon. The platen on this machine has hardened with age and will leave indentations and cutouts in the page as you type, but that effect can be reduced by using cushioning sheets of paper. The bell on this machine rings as loudly and as clearly as any I've ever heard, and the keys are solid. Typing on a flatbed is a unique experience, and one that isn't easily replicated.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
This Royal 1 represents a rare opportunity. I would recommend this typewriter to anyone who wants an iconic, woking antique typewriter of distinction and beauty. Collectors who want a Royal 1 in great condition will also appreciate this machine as a standout piece.

The Royal 1 is one of the most widely recognized and sought-after typewriters for designers, decorators, and collectors, and it's easy to see why. Display it in your home, at your office, or anywhere you want to appreciate a working relic transported through time from the machine age.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I do sell to customers outside the continental United States, so if you're an international buyer, please contact me so I can get you a personalized shipping quote.

**SHIPPING**
Please note that these old Royal desktop typewriters are large, and it takes some time and effort to prepare them for shipping. If you don't package these antique typewriters correctly, they can be easily damaged during shipping simply because they can tear themselves to pieces when they are inevitably moved around too forcefully. I've shipped hundreds of machines, and know what it takes to get them to their destination safely. I typically ship via FedEx, and will send a tracking number to you as soon as I have your package prepared.

Thank you for looking, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
