As I took a soft polishing cloth to the top of this purse,
I realized how beautiful the workmanship really was.
The clamshell, or scalloped motif, very much used in the victorian era,
graces the top of this opera purse.

Dating to the late 1800's- turn of the last century,
the purse is made of a black heavy cotton velvet,
lined in fine black silk.
Both layers sewn neatly onto this silver gilted metal compact frame.
Metal may be brass. Press the release,
and the top opens to reveal a mirror in excellent condition.
The purse is clean, large enough that it will fit all of an evening's necessary things.

The fabric is exceptionally clean, with no damage.
It looks to be original, and in perfect condition.
The silver gilt is in excellent condition,
and I would advise against any strong polishing agents being used on the top, as you will remove the enhancing dark patina, that has occurred over the century.

You can see in the 4 panel photo, that the first photo half the top is unpolished,
and all it needed was a light hand with the cloth, to bring out it's beauty. Nothing more.
The chain is very tarnished, and rusty in most areas,
and did not come out as clean as the top, but still perfectly usable as is.

A black velvet handle would look perfect on this purse, and easy to make, should you want to replace the rusty chain.

The top measures 3 3/4" in diameter, and about 3/8" thick.
Opens and closes perfectly, and the chained handle is 12" long.
No hallmarks found.

Body of purse is pleated. and has a round bottom,
is about 7" long, and 5 " wide, but the width will vary depending on how much you put into it.

Simply gorgeous, and better looking in person, as velvet is very hard to photograph.
Natural lighting is always best for velvets. If you need anymore photos, just let me know.
