Description

Hand-plucked from our pristine mountain farm and surrounding Montana mountain wilderness, this Usnea lichen is wild and naturally organic. This listing is for a natural mix of both fresh and lightly dried Usnea. These are whole, natural clumps, ranging from 3/4" to 3"+. This lichen is untampered with, unheated, and packed fresh. We groom out as much woody debris and other lichens as possible; trace/trivial bits may remain.

Usnea, like other lichen, is the result of a symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi. Usnea lichens are characterized by their singular root/anchor point, branching out with fine fibers and hairs like a little shrub, as well as its light elasticity, attributed to by the tiny, durable white "cord" or "root" that runs through its core. There are many, many varieties of Usnea that are very difficult to distinguish. Our native Usnea varieties will share the same healing properties.

USNEA AS A HEALING HERB

[**The following is an excerpt from Medicinal Plants of the Western Mountain States by C. W. Kane. **]

Chemistry:
Sterols, diterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, dibenzofurans; usnic acid, xanthones, anthraquinones, polysaccharides

Medicinal Uses:
Usnea's alignment of traditional use and modern research helps to shed light on its three best areas of influence: the lungs, urinary tract, and skin. The lichen's medicinal value is based on its mild immune stimulating polysaccharide and strongly antimicrobial usnic acid principles.
Applied to bronchitis, sore throats, and sinusitis, Usnea has a significant influence. Additionally, due to the tea's (or a small bunch well-chewed and swallowed) minor gelatinous quality, it's found particularly helpful when respiratory tissues are raw and inflamed. In fact, if caught early enough in their progressions (dry hacking cough), I've seen cases of soon-to-be bronchitis resolve without further incident.
Topical preparations of Usnea should be applied to problem wounds, cuts, and incisions where there is danger of growing infection. The ointment in conjunction with proper wound cleansing/dressing is the best way to proceed. Internal use of Usnea... combined with its topical use will be more effective. Additionally, even low-level bacterial skin problems such as Acne vulgaris respond well to the tincture applied nightly to the problem area. ...If it's bacterial (fungal/yeast... lesser so) skin infection, try tpoically applied Usnea. It most likely will help the condition.
Usnea has a sound record of addressing urinary tract infections that do not respond to Heath family plants (Uva Ursi, etc.). It also rarely causes renal irritation with overuse, a caution that applies to most in the Heath family. Another option if the type of urinary infection is unknown is to combine Usnea with Uva-Ursi [both of which we carry] in order to cover both bases - E. coli and non-E. Coli types.
Some of the more common bacteria that Usnea (usnic acid) has shown activity against are Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Bacteroides, and Mycobacteria strains. I don't recommend Usnea used as a stand-alone treatment for MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) or MDR-TB infections (multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis) infections; however, its use alongside conventional antibiotics is theoretically promising.
Usnic acid demonstrates significant inhibitory activity against Trichomonas vaginali, the parasite responsible for Trichomoniasis or "trich" infections. Try Usnea in these cases: the strong tea used as a douche along with internal tincture or capsules (or for men, internal use alone) is potentially a good treatment.

Indications [for use]
- Bronchitis
- Sinusitis
- Infections, topical (external)
- Infections, urinary tract
- Vaginitis (internal and external)

Cautions:
Consider Usnea a short-term use medicinal lichen: 1-2 weeks of consecutive use at a time. The tea (and capsules) can sometimes be upsetting to the stomach. If this is the case, switch to tincture/fluidextract preparations. Dermatitis is rarely reported for individuals in daily contact with the lichen (forest workers). If skin irritation or redness does develop with its topical use, it's best to switch to a different herbal treatment. Topical preparations during pregnancy, while nursing, or with children are fine, but I'm unable to confidently recommend its internal use.
Aside from an occasional upset stomach, reports of human Usnea (whole-lichen preparations) are few to none. However isolated usnic acid or its salts, taken as an isolated substance may be problematic. A number of cases of hepatotoxicity have been reported for at least one weight loss supplement containing sodium usniate. Complicating the situation though is the supplement (Lipokinetix) also contained caffeine, Yohimbe, diidothyronine, and norephedrine. Consumed in mega doses (s diet supplements usually are) it's anyone's guess as to what compound or combination thereof was problematic.

**Always do research for yourself before using herbs for healing. There are many great, educational books available! I like to cross reference several reputable sources before using a new herb. I am obligated to remind you that you are solely responsible for your own actions and what you choose to do with this herb. This product is not intended to treat, diagnose, or cure any disease.**

Our herbs are always sustainably harvested, with little to no impact on the plants' populations or health! For Usnea (and other lichens), we pluck lichen from healthy colonies, grooming several acres at a time as to not over-harvest any one area. The photos in this listing are examples of the lichen you will receive.

For other lichen species, just drop us a line!

Additional policies

REGARDING WOLF, BLACK BEAR, COUGAR, AND LYNX:
Etsy does not allow the sale of products or specimens derived from these species, HOWEVER it IS legal for my business to trade and export these species. These bans are NOT based on any federal laws or legal restrictions. You can check here for current inventory on these species:
http://www.desertrosetaxidermy.com

If you would like to place a custom order for one of these species, please message me on Etsy, or send an email to contact [!at] DesertRoseTaxidermy.com.
Some states/countries may restrict the import, purchase, or ownership of bear, wolf and cougar, so please check with your local Fish and Game and know your wildlife laws before placing an order.

OWL, HAWK, RAVEN, AND OTHER MIGRATORY BIRDS AND BIRDS OF PREY:
I get a lot of custom requests for items from birds of prey and other migratory species. Nearly all migratory birds are federally protected, and it is illegal to possess any part (bone, nest, or feather) of these animals. I cannot help you with your quest for these specimens!

FAQs

Here’s the scoop:
Wildlife has international trade regulations. The fees, permits, and lengthy processes have made it impractical for me to continue offering international wildlife shipment.

The good news:
Items from domesticated species have no USA export regulations. I can ship domesticated species worldwide with no additional export fees.

Remember:
Always check your local customs and regulations before importing any animal specimens!
I do not trap. I do hunt, but not for business. Wildlife is only ever taken for food or farm security. Precious few of my wildlife specimens will have come from personal hunting. The vast majority of my wildlife items are salvaged “waste” from the hunting and trapping trades, where it is commonplace for most of the animal to be discarded. This unique form of “recycling” offers folks a chance to use and honor pieces that would otherwise have been thrown away! As of 2018, none of our bones will have had any monetary exchange attached to them; we clean foraged and salvaged bones only!
