This classic red and white handwoven chef's towel measures a generous 18" wide by 23" long and is woven using sustainable, U.S.-grown cotton in the warp (lengthwise yarn) and organic cottolin (50% linen, 50% organic cotton) in the weft (crosswise yarn). It's got a substantial, soft feel in your hand - a pleasure to work with on a daily basis in your kitchen.

Reusable kitchen towels are a perfect alternative to wasteful paper towels! Use one for a day and toss it in the wash just as you would a mass-manufactured dishcloth. It's already been washed once, as part of the finishing process, so there is no need to fear washing your handwovens, they're made to be sturdy and long-lasting and will not shrink.

When weaving these towels, I created a twill pattern that resulted in two slightly different faces to the cloth - one side is a bit more red (weft-dominant), the other a bit more natural colored (warp-dominant). The fifth and sixth photos of above show the two faces of the towel. Natural colored stripes accent both ends of the towel. Twill weaves create floats - areas where the weft yarn goes over and under more than one warp yarn at a time. Those floats create both the pattern and a wonderful drape to the fabric, as well as making it very absorbent. The linen/cotton blend of yarn in the weft also adds to the towel's absorbency.

I strive to use ecofriendly materials in all of my textiles - this particular towel uses sustainable cotton grown and spun in the United States for the warp. U.S. farmers involved in the Sustainable Cotton Project refrain from using sixteen of the most common pesticides used on conventional cotton, and emphasize water conservation - the cotton grown by these farmers is also now known as Cleaner Cotton. The weft (crosswise) yarn is a blend of 50% organic cotton and 50% linen, spun and dyed just to my north, in Quebec.

Machine wash warm.
Tumble dry.
