Antique silverplate souvenir spoon commemorating the Columbian World Exposition / Fair in Chicago 1892-1893.

The bowl of the spoon reads "World's fair City".

The finial of the front depicts (from top to bottom) Christopher Columbus holding a flag, a banner with the world "COLUMBUS", one of his ships, and "1492" on another banner.

The piece is marked US STERLING

The US Sterling company manufactured silverplate souvenir spoons in the 1890s into the early 1900s. Their pieces were made to be misleading as most were not marked for silverplate (e.g. "plate", "A1", "XXXX" or other known silverplate marks), leaving many to think that they were sterling silver, not realising that "sterling silver" or its abbreviation was not in reference to the quality of the metal, but to the name of the manufacturer. Some of their later pieces (1900s) are marked as "US STERLING A1."

The plating was not very well done as it appears to have chipped off at several places on the back of the bowl, revealing the brass underneath.

Length: 11.0 cm (4 5/16")
