Description

The True Wilderness: A Selection of Addresses by HA Williams.

Published by Constable, First published 1965.

Description to dj: HA Williams, a Fellow and Dean of Trinity college, Cambridge, where he teaches academic theology. But he came to the conclusion that any knowledge so imparted could never be anything but external to the self. 'I decided, therefore', he writes, 'that alongside of teaching academic theology I would try to ask myself how far and in what way a doctrine of the creed or a saying of Christ had become part of what I am. The pulpit seemed the obvious place from which to expound what I thus discovered...'
'I said I decided on this course. But that is misleading. The decision was taken for me
in some area of my being over which I had no control... Unless what I proposed to say came from the depths of my own experience, I was struck dumb."
These are not sermons in the conventional sense: they have the broken, illuminating quality characteristic, rather, of great poetry. The author's deepest experience, here distilled, gives these addresses a uniquely personal authority which makes them immeasurably valuable not just for Christians but for many who would not normally fell themselves to be religious. For as Martin Luther wrote - not reading and speculating, but living, dying, and being condemned make a real theologian.

Condition: Dust jacked with wear to extremities. Red hardcover in good condition. Pages a little tanned with age and foxing to page edges but main text pages in good, clean condition.

Size: 20x14 cm.
