Natural Wood Bullroarer *Sycamore* for Success!

This bullroarer appears in a treasury celebrating the beauty of wood by mshafran here: www.etsy.com/treasury/4d3226416ea66d91ffa65fe3/knock-on-wood

... and in one celebrating the bull by beeanddew here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/NTUxOTcyM3w4OTQzMDYxNzM/bull

This is a bullroarer, made from a truly beautiful piece of Sycamore wood. Bullroarers are whirled round on the end of a length of cord and as they twist through the air they create a sound quite unlike anything else; an atmospheric hum that seems to resonate with the very bones of Mother Earth and can be varied with the speed of the swing as well as the length of the cord. They are used to call the spirits of the ancestors or local guardians, or to keep away any malevolent entities. Although most commonly associated with the Australian aboriginal people, artifacts like this have been found connected to many primitive cultures throughout the world and are increasingly being used by modern witches and pagans of all kinds.

This particular bullroarer is quite small and light, convenient for indoor ritual and very easy to take with you anywhere. I chose this piece of Sycamore wood partly because Sycamore is excellent for helping to raise energy levels, which is immensely useful during any kind of ritual, but mostly because it's just so incredibly beautiful! The wood shows some absolutely gorgeous colours and grain patterns, as well as some stunning iridescent figuring that gives an almost 3D effect.

It comes with about three feet of waxed cotton cord attached with a knot that won't twist loose (especially important if you want to avoid the hazard of high-speed flying missiles inside your home!) I use waxed cotton cord because unlike most types of cord or string it is braided, not twisted. Twisted cord will unravel over time from the constant twisting of the wooden blade in the air, which has a weakening effect on the cord as well as looking unsightly.

As usual, all the work was done the traditional way by hand, with no help from power tools of any kind. Both the cord and the oiled finish are completely free of animal products and there are no metal parts.

This is the most basic form of bullroarer I regularly make, but I can make them from any wood I have large enough and whatever size or shape you'd like, with runes or other symbols burnt into the wood. Just drop me a convo if you'd like one custom made to your own specifications.

More correctly called Great Maple. Due to a mistranslation, Sycamore has been mistakenly credited with being sacred to the Egyptians. It is believed to promote relaxation and harmony, whilst at the same time raising energy levels and banishing lethargy. It is good for any magic to do with prosperity, love or longevity. It is said to bring success and abundance, but also to teach humility.

Size: About seven and three quarter inches long, an inch and five eighths wide and about a quarter of an inch thick.
197mm x 42mm x 6mm.

It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.

For a full list of the woods I might have available as well as their magical properties, associated folklore, and a bunch of other stuff, check out my blog at: http://www.mazedasastoat.blogspot.com/
