Description

The Letters From the Sea Tower are handmade monthly subscription letters that celebrate art and literature and how it matters for the Great Battle of Our Time. My dream for this project is to produce a letter that fills people with courage and creativity and to contribute to the revival of beautiful, meaningful, and unique hard-copy mail. Why? Because I know: the world isn’t always a glad place. What’s around us is sometimes so dark. And I want to do some little thing to bring the wisdom and the beauty of the ages right down into mailboxes and homes in a tangible form: fresh artwork on paper you can hold and hang up on the fridge and carry around in your pocket. I want to give people courage, because goodness only knows we NEED it. I need it every day.

The letters are handwritten and painted by me and then carefully scanned and reprinted in my own home on heavy, archival quality, 100% cotton Southworth paper. I personalize them by hand for each recipient and mail them out monthly in an epic old-fashioned envelope with ink stamps and unique postage stamps. The letters are filled with watercolor paintings and sketches, field notes from nature or history or my travels, and illustrated poetry or quotes from my commonplace book. They are designed to be a well of stories and ideas that inspire others to take heart and remember their callings.

I strongly believe in the value of this project and I want these letters to enrich as many lives as possible, so I have done my utmost to make the subscription as affordable and accessible as I can. Both domestic and international shipping is FREE, and I offer a range of different subscription offers. So if you’re not sure if this subscription is for you, you can try it out for just one month (and you’ll actually receive two letters with this purchase, since the initial introductory letter is included with any first-time subscription!) You can also purchase a subscription as a gift for someone else. If you are purchasing a gift subscription, please let me know in an Etsy convo so that I can work with you to prepare a gift message for your recipient and package their first letter in an especially beautiful way!

INSPIRATION
The inspiration for the name of this subscription comes from an essay J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about literary criticism of Beowulf. In his essay, Tolkien tells a little allegorical story about a man who built a tower on his property. His friends and neighbors thought the tower was a waste of valuable material, but they didn’t know that the man had built it in order to be able to see the sea. My hope is that these letters will offer a similar vantage-point as the tower in that story, that in the middle of our often dreary and monotonous lives, they will be a reminder of glory and unseen reality and a fleeting glimpse of “Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.”

SUBSCRIPTION NOTES
If you are a first-time subscriber, I’ll be sending you my introductory letter within that first week after you place your order. You will then receive monthly letters for the number of months you’ve subscribed. Thus, if you order a one-month subscription, you’ll receive two letters: the introductory letter and then the letter I produce for the following month. If you order a three-month subscription, you’ll receive the introductory letter and then the next three letters I produce for the following months, and so on. If you’ve already received the introductory letter and are renewing your subscription, you won’t receive it again, but will just receive one letter for a one-month subscription, three letters for a three-month subscription, six for a six-month subscription, and so on. Please note that this project is a new launch and the second letter will not be sent out until January 2019.
