Description

On the wood forms:

If you are new to my work, welcome to the abstract world of the wood forms. I strive to find dynamic and strong expressions of life's puzzles, ironies and the human condition. In our journey together as a species we travel across the landscape of experience, riding up and down over the bumps and hills and winding streets and rivers. Underlying this all is an unmovable presence, a field of stillness and peace which never wavers. This is the life force which binds us with other forms on the planet and it is this which I bring into my sculptures through metaphor, dancing intimately and intrinsically with the physical material — the space and emptiness surrounding the form, without which the form could not exist.

On the concept:

How much of our life is owed to the colourings our thoughts give to the picture? This piece entitled "Ungraspable Truth No.1" refers to insights fundamentally arising outside the field of thought and therefore the futility of the search and effort to find truths through analysis or thinking. Trying to chew one's own teeth is a good metaphor. The thinking mind cannot see its own nature because any attempt to see itself is still within the dimension of thought. An insight into this whole mechanism is required for the arrival of a wholistic truth.

On the form and material:

Freestanding and structural, organic and harmonious — the form succeeds in supporting itself with gravity. Within this structural balance we find a dynamic interplay of parts, engaged and interacting in subtle yet powerful ways. With the metaphysical concept outlined above, motion and exchange plays a pivotal part in the piece. An evasive and life-like entity is sculpted with abstract representations of deep human perceptions. The smooth twists and surfaces are reminiscent of plant life and animal physiology.

The carving block consists of one piece of wood. The surface is waxed with a beeswax/mineral oil mixture. This brings out the richness in the colour and adds a matte coating. The horizontal grain pattern contributes to the balanced serenity of the piece.
