when carving a bowl i start by just looking at the wood grain. i try go with the flow of the natural characteristics present. i've started trying to leave the natural bark on the edges. this sometimes becomes difficult because your chopping and the vibration loosens the bark. my goal really is to try and just let the bowl flow into creation. i do use a rotary sander to clean out and do the final sanding.

this bowl was carved from a limb of a huge local reclaimed cottonwood tree that was removed for urban expansion. the bowl measures: 15 3/4" long X 12 1/8" wide and about 4 1/4" tall. about(3 3/4" deep on the inside). i used a finish made from citrus, pure linseed oil and beeswax. the finish was made by bio-shield. i believe in using non-toxic deep penetrating finishes, 7+ coats. to maintain the bowls finish you can use a clean lemon oil or any clean natural non-died beeswax based finishing paste. the figure curl in this bowl looks very translucent and with proper lighting 3 dimensional. hand signed with a wood burning pen.
