Highlights
Cotton Rag Sketchbook for watercolours and all other wet art media. These beloved lay-flat art journals have a beautifully tactile, natural feel. I make them in 4 sizes, each with 210gsm 100% cotton rag handmade paper with deckle edges. As seen in Country Homes & Interiors magazine, Nov/Dec 2023. A4 Chunky - same as large, but with extra pages (128 in total)
A4 Large 28 cm x 19 cm / 11.25 x 7.75 inches with 96 pages
A5 Medium 19 x 15 cm / 7.75 x 5.75 inches with 80 pages
A6 Small 15 x 10 cm / 5.75 x 4 inches with 64 pages
LAY-FLAT BINDING
Exposed spine stitching in linen thread allows the pages to stay open on a table so your sketchbook is easy to draw, paint, collage or stitch in.
COTTON RAG PAPER FOR WET & DRY MEDIA
The pages are acid-free 210gsm weight paper (sturdy, but not stiff), with a 'medium' surface. It is internally and surface sized, so you can use it for all wet and dry artwork such as gouache, watercolour, acrylic, oils and ink, for drawing, collage, mixed media or stitching. I use these sketchbooks myself.
DESIGN INSPIRATION:
Inspired by the Japanese Wabi Sabi aesthetic, these minimalist books do not have covers, they are simple, unadorned and let the beauty of their natural materials speak for themselves. The exposed spine style turns what is usually hidden (in a hardback book), into a design feature (I love playing with ideas of in/visibility).
I was also inspired by American poet Emily Dickinson's habit of using ribbons to tie up her letters and poems into little bundles. I loved this and so I incorporated an unbleached woven linen ribbon into the binding, which wraps around the book and ties in a bow to keep its contents safe during travel or for storage.
ETHICAL & SUSTAINABLE:
The paper is fairtrade, meaning the people who made it are paid fairly and treated well. It's handmade from offcuts of t-shirts, which saves fashion industry waste from going into landfill. The ribbon and binding thread are linen, which is one of the most sustainable fibres on earth. The linen elements are as tactile and natural as the paper, making this sketchbook a joy to use and reassuring to purchase for those who want to make ethical, responsible choices.
