Item details

Vintage from before 2000

Our vintage Japanese gold thread is a link with the past. The thread is comprised of 24k gold foil wrapped around a strand of silk thread. It was made by small children with nimble, deft fingers who wound the gold foil onto the silk thread, but machinery was created in 1910 that could do the job. The precious thread was woven into kimonos and obis (the wide belts used around kimonos. This is how it was made: a single strand of silk thread was laminated with silver, gold was then electroplated onto the silver. This sounds impossible, but that is how it was made and the thread is supple and easily worked.
The gold is only microns thick but despite its age, it is very strong and can be used without fear of breakage. It has been used in jewelry, clothing, embroidery, knitting, crochet, goldwork, needlepoint, religious garments and restoration of artifacts.
What we have of this rare thread is listed, we cannot order more. Occasionally, our representative in Japan finds more thread, usually at auctions when an old silk house closes its door. But that doesn't happen often, what we have is what there is....there is no more.
