Woodsy Owl is an owl icon for the United States Forest Service most famous for the motto "Give a hoot — don't pollute!" Woodsy's current motto is "Lend a hand — Care for the Land!" Woodsy's target audience is children 5 to 8 years old and he was designed to be seen as a mentor to children, providing them with information and advice to help them appreciate nature. In 2006, a "new" Woodsy Owl mascot was introduced. The Woodsy you see here is the original Woodsy from 1970.

Woodsy Owl was created by Harold Bell of Western Publishing (also the producer of Smokey Bear public service announcements) for the first Earth Day in 1970 as part of a forest service campaign to raise awareness of protecting the environment. Several songs have been used in conjunction with the Woodsy Owl environmental campaign, including "The Ballad of Woodsy Owl" and "Help Woodsy Spread the Word".

This is an original unused membership card from the Woodsy Owl Cooperative Outdoor Environmental Campaign. This card was made in 1972. The Government Printing Office No. is 924-652. This card is new old stock and unsigned. This card is green print on white and measures 3.5” L X 2.375” H and is made of paper, it’s heavier than standard copier paper but lighter than typical cardstock. As with most paper items of the period these are rare and apparently few if any exist today. I have not been able to find another one like it any place on the web or in antique stores. I finally found a Smokey Bear Junior Forestry Membership card from 1971 selling on another site for $18.00 with $5.00 shipping so I have based my price on this.

I have only a few of these available. The one you see here in the photo is the one you will receive. As you can see there are a few light scuffmarks on it but it is still in very good condition and would make a great addition to anyone’s Woodsy collection.

Thank you for stopping by my shop today and please have a look around, I have several other vintage Woodsy Owl items to look at. Here is my shop link:
