The original Hurricane Woman painting was used as the cover of APEX Magazine.
The magazine's editor had this to say about the image:

“Hurricane Woman” by Sarah Zar is a little different style than most of the covers I choose for Apex Magazine. The speculative element is more subtle, less spectacular unreality and more the hidden storm inside of us all. The woman’s face is impassive. Her clothing nearly matches the background, as if she spends her life trying to blend in, not wanting to call attention to herself. But the moment of the piece is one in which she’s revealing what is inside of her. She pulls apart the fabric of her dress (of herself?) and inside a storm is brewing. One that spills out of her. One that could drown us all. And I’d swear there’s a glint in her eyes as she stares back at the viewer that is daring us to judge her, to judge the fact that she couldn’t hold back the emotions roiling within her any longer."

Saw the painting on line when Sara Zar first posted it. loved it to moment I saw it, and my spouse agreed. The print we have has a realistic look to it. It draws you into the elements: face shape to wine glass shape with the water forming a waterfall. A great composition around my favorite element: water. Even better that it was painted a week before hurricane Sandy hit NYC; a very sad for NY, but it inspired this as a means of containing the water with hope of better times ahead.

I came across this painting, The Lightning Woman, while looking for art that could encapsulate a childhood memory, and I instantly fell in love with it. After I asked my goddess for a sign if I should get it, an unexpected and fierce lightning storm swept over my town. When I told the artist, Sarah, about this, she and I ended up having some truly deep and wonderful conversations about the strangeness of life, art, and female empowerment. The print is gorgeous, and having a piece of art made by such an articulate, insightful, and interesting artist makes it mean even more to me. Sarah's other work on her website is also quite amazing. By getting this print, I feel that I have brought something magical into my house.
