Southern Potteries began operation in 1917 under the name Clinchfield Pottery after the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railroad that sold them the land. In April 1920 the name was changed to Southern Potteries. They initially produced decal decorated dinnerware and hotel ware, The pieces collected from this era are mostly the advertising pieces and ashtrays. Underglaze hand painting gradually became the company's focal point and in the mid 1930's they had introduced the name Blue Ridge Dinnerware to represent these types of decorated wares. By the early 1950's, the company was producing over 24 million pieces of pottery a year and had introduced over 4100 patterns. The company closed in 1957. The most valuable pieces are those decorated with people, animals or holiday themed pieces.
The underglaze technique used has made their patterns very durable and considering that each piece was hand painted there are no two pieces exactly alike.
