FURTHER INFORMATION:

Miriam Haskell jewellery has always been noted for the detailing, which directly translated into the time it took to make and thus the cost. Her combs are always signed in a small gilt metal cartouche on the back. Another sign of authenticity to look for are the small gilt or silver tone flower shaped mounts which appear on the back of the heading.

One of the features of jewellery and personal ornaments produced during the 1970s was the so called “back to nature” look. This is expressed in the use of naturalistic motifs such as flowers and leaves, echoing the earlier Art Nouveau movement.

Another manifestation was the use of natural materials such as mother of pearl, bone or natural unpolished pebbles. Where synthetic materials are utilised they are usually made to look like wood, pebbles, bone or other materials found in nature.

The 1970s were characterised by a variety of different hair styles some of which were extremely elaborate and cried out for adornment.
