Description

This lovely lot of 11 antique buttons from the late 1800s all depict various gods of Greek & Roman mythology. Based upon the reference book, "The Big Book of Buttons", these buttons are:
- 4 variations of the button titled, "Neptune", picturing Poseidon with his trident surrounded by a wave and rope border. One example has a rarer wooden background.
- 3 variations of the button titled, "Neptune", picturing Poseidon with his trident and horse standing atop a clamshell surrounded by beautiful scrollwork waves. One example is a somewhat newer reproduction (probably made in the first half of the 1900s).
- 1 variation of the button titled, "Phaethon", depicting the Greek/Roman god Apollo (or possibly his son Phaethon) driving a chariot drawn by horses through the clouds with an intense sun blazing in the background.
- 3 variations of the button titled, "Mercury", picturing a highly detailed relief cameo of the Greek god Hermes shown wearing a winged cap atop a tinted backdrop.

These are as found and have various backings and run from 5/8" to 1 1/2" in size. There is charming weathering and patina from over 100 years of age and wear. Great for button collectors, sewing enthusiasts, fashion historians, and work wonderfully fashioned into keepsakes such as jewelry. Take your favorite to your local jeweler and have them professionally transformed into wearable art such as necklaces, rings, and brooches.
