The new year rang in loud and clear with shouts of merry making and celebration across the cold, crisp valley. Fireworks exploded in the night sky, dazzling displays that made a frosty face worthwhile. Their colours and lights trailing like magic....and in the darkness, the first seconds of new year enveloping the land...maybe it was.
Champagne was raised, toasts were said and singing voices competed with cheerful conversations. The last of the holiday cookies were snacked, resolutions were still firmly placed out of mind until the morning...or later afternoon...
There were candies and Christmas lights, sparkles and shine and everything sweet and happy to bring the end of the year to a perfect close.
There was an explosion. A burst of light and energy that halted the noises of merry making, for just an instant. A hush fell across that valley as every one paused, listened, shrugged and assumed it was one last firework, one straggler.
It a way. One firework that shouldn't have gone off but did, that lit up in an un-earthly green blue blaze of light and streaked horizontally across the earth, skipping along the hedges and houses, a ball of light with a destination it seemed.
It zeroed in on the happiest party of all, the one with laughter and light spilling from the house, splashing across the front yard. The one where the champagne flowed freely, sparkling the spirits of the party goers. Where the treats were plentiful, salty and sweet mingling with the party chatter.
Also, the house where there just happened to be a dormant 17 year old cat nip plant growing in the side yard.....which would mean nothing except that the ball of fireworks like energy passed harmlessly through the front door, startling the bleary eyed people inside. It rushed out the open back door, party hats, confetti, champagne and candy drops caught in it's wake and crashed into the dormant 17 year old catnip plant.
A shower of glitter fell across the onlookers like warm snow. The scent of cotton candy tickled their noses, a low rumbling purr danced across the chilly night air and teased their ears....
Who knows what would have happened if it had been a 16 year old plant...or 18...anything perhaps. But it wasn't, and the circumstances were such that on that night, the very beginnings of the new year, a cat, unlike any other, crawled out of the dried, tangled nip. Whiskers twitching, tail swishing, the light faded and the people stared in shock, some glanced at their champagne....
"Me-ow." It said into the silence, blinking one eye rapidly as if trying to focus on the faces who stared back at him, doing some rapid blinking of their own I might add.
"My name''s..." He paused to hiccup, rather delicately, ending with another roaring burst of feline purr. "My name's Tiddly, I have come to attend this fine, upstanding, standing up, or rather, this party...of good standing."
The people giggled, as if on cue and Tiddly rewarded them with a sleepy smile, taking it as invitation to join the fun. He waddled into the warmth of the house where the party began to pick up again.
It was a helluva start to the new year, and everyone who could remember the events clearly the next morning agreed. Including Tiddly.
