Description
This antique Shaker sewing box, dating to the late 1800s, is rustic but striking, with a beveled lid and inlaid wood in a simple rectangular pattern on the lid and front. The box has a dark wood veneer (walnut, I think, but with a reddish stain) and is lined with wallpaper that is light blue with gold stars and circles. It also has a lock, but no key, and a chain to hold the lid upright when the box is open.
This 19th century box probably was originally fitted with a tray insert, but that is missing, and the lining may have been a later addition (though probably still at least 50 to 70 years old). The box has a somewhat distressed finish, including one small spot of missing veneer (on the front right corner of the lid). There's also a lot of wear on the interior, with tears, darkened areas, and some pencil marks. Still, the box has a rich patina, a great rustic look, and it's sturdy and still usable as a storage container, or beautiful just for display.
Size: About 11 inches wide x 8 inches deep x 3.75 inches tall
