Description

This is a listing for 1lb / 16oz. of fine filtered wood ash. This wood ash is collected from our wood stove, which provides us with heat, hot water, and a means of cooking most of the year. We burn only wood harvested right here on the mountain. The ash has had no exposure to water nor the elements and has been sifted through a 1/16" filter to remove charcoal lumps. Its texture is mesmerizing, almost feeling like a liquid when fluffed with your hands, yet can be dense when compressed

This ash is technically "softwood ash". What's the difference between hardwood and softwood? Hardwood is not indicatively a harder wood, nor is softwood indicatively a softer wood. For example, balsa wood is one of the lightest woods there is, but it's considered a hardwood, and Douglas fir (a softwood) is denser than many common hardwoods.
The difference in terminology is determined simply by how the plant reproduces.

It is true that, in general, most hardwood ashes have a slightly higher potassium content than most softwoods. But there are some softwoods whose ashes exceed the potassium content of some hardwood ashes.

What does this mean? Well, it means that softwood ash may have a bit less potassium in it. Nothing more.

What can this wood ash be used for?
- I primarily use it for making rawhides. The purpose of the ash is to preserve the hide from rotting while the pores release the hair. A 1lb bag should be enough for a full deer rawhide, for example.
- Wood ash is also a fabulous soil amender, pest repellent, and PH balancer in the garden. Softwood ash can be handy here as well, when higher levels of potassium are not as desired in the soil.
- Lye is a by-product of wood ash that can be made at home, and is a handy thing to have around when making soaps and cleaners. Lye is caustic, yes, but it is a highly concentrated byproduct of ash. Pure wood ash is not caustic or harsh in its whole, natural state. You can make lye from softwood just as you would hardwood ash.
- We've also used our wood ash to make morel spore slurries. We can inoculate our forests with morels and keep their mycelium happy by feeding them more raw wood ash each season.
- Chickens (and other poultry) LOVE bathing in wood ash! I've found when I offer both ash and dry soil, they always choose the ash. I don't know the chemical interaction taking place, but it really seems to help them stay clean and parasite-free.
- Use the ash as a non-flammable ultra-lightweight medium in incense bowls, mini zen gardens, and other functional decor.
- Use as a light-weight traction and ice-melting agent in slick winter conditions
- And more!

Additional policies

REGARDING WOLF, BLACK BEAR, COUGAR, AND LYNX:
Etsy does not allow the sale of products or specimens derived from these species, HOWEVER it IS legal for my business to trade and export these species. These bans are NOT based on any federal laws or legal restrictions. You can check here for current inventory on these species:
http://www.desertrosetaxidermy.com

If you would like to place a custom order for one of these species, please message me on Etsy, or send an email to contact [!at] DesertRoseTaxidermy.com.
Some states/countries may restrict the import, purchase, or ownership of bear, wolf and cougar, so please check with your local Fish and Game and know your wildlife laws before placing an order.

OWL, HAWK, RAVEN, AND OTHER MIGRATORY BIRDS AND BIRDS OF PREY:
I get a lot of custom requests for items from birds of prey and other migratory species. Nearly all migratory birds are federally protected, and it is illegal to possess any part (bone, nest, or feather) of these animals. I cannot help you with your quest for these specimens!

FAQs

Here’s the scoop:
Wildlife has international trade regulations. The fees, permits, and lengthy processes have made it impractical for me to continue offering international wildlife shipment.

The good news:
Items from domesticated species have no USA export regulations. I can ship domesticated species worldwide with no additional export fees.

Remember:
Always check your local customs and regulations before importing any animal specimens!
I do not trap. I do hunt, but not for business. Wildlife is only ever taken for food or farm security. Precious few of my wildlife specimens will have come from personal hunting. The vast majority of my wildlife items are salvaged “waste” from the hunting and trapping trades, where it is commonplace for most of the animal to be discarded. This unique form of “recycling” offers folks a chance to use and honor pieces that would otherwise have been thrown away! As of 2018, none of our bones will have had any monetary exchange attached to them; we clean foraged and salvaged bones only!
